Acute knee pain that is caused by overuse typically subsides on its own after a few days, but you can try a few of these homecare techniques to help reduce the pain while you heal:
- Icing — Apply a bag of ice or frozen vegetables to the sore area for 15 minutes two or three times a day. Do this for a few days to help reduce the swelling and assist with managing pain.
- Heating –After a couple of days of icing, you can begin to apply some heat. Heating the sensitive area should help provide some comfort while you’re recovering. Do not heat immediately when you initially experience pain because heating can make inflammation worse.
- Resting — Cut back on physical activities that put a lot of stress on your knee. You should continue maintaining some level of activity, but do not overdo it and cause more pain to develop in your knee.
- Compressing — To help reduce swelling, you should wrap your knee in a compression bandage. Do not wrap the knee too tight or you may cut off circulation or cause pain to grow more severe.
This kind of treatment should help provide some relief while your knee heals, but if your knee pain is more extreme or long-lasting, you should seek medical attention.
